River: Virgin
Segment:Timpoweap Canyon
Flow: 1,000
Date: April 2, 1993
Description: The dam marks the beginning of Timpoweap Canyon (type locality of the Timpoweap limestone which occupies the vertical horizon between the Virgin limestone member of the Moenkopi formation above and the better-known Kaibab limestone below). Higher flows cover the spillway river-left of the gate structure. The put-in for the Timp canyon run is downstream around the corner (out of sight in this picture). The politics of water in the west... This roller-gate diversion dam channels Virgin River water into a 9-mile-long pipeline that empties into Quail Lake, an off-channel reservoir. The pipeline also supplies about 100 cfs to the Hurricane Canal Company and water to two power generation plants. The pipeline and diversion will also provide water to the Sand Hollow reservoir and ground-water storage project, now being built on the north flank of Sand Mountain, south and east of Quail Lake.
