River: Virgin River
Segment: Upper Gorge--By-the-Pipe rapid
Flow: 400 cfs
Date: May 2000
Class: III
Paddler: Jeanine Howells
Description: By-the-Pipe is named for the 3 large culverts under the freeway that drain a normally dry canyon to the north . In the early 1990's a flash flood moved these boulders out of the side canyon and into the river bed. There is good surfing at higher flows, and rocks to bounce off at lower water. Looking east is the Kaibab limestone capping the rim of the canyon.
