| Description: Landslide Rapid was formed by the right wall of the canyon slumping into the river channel. The river cut through the slide within hours, taking the road out, too. An armored wall was installed to protect the road--the only access to Zion Lodge and the upper canyon, but a 4,300 cfs flood took out the wall, too. This photo was taken before the flood. The rapid was reconstructed with four four-foot drop structures designed to reduce the current velocities through this reach. If anything, the engineers made a bigger, badder rapid out of Nature's handiwork. |
